这个词的词义颇为古怪。它来自于希腊神话中的Tantalus, 此君乃是希腊神话中的主神Zeus的儿子，有一次他把很多神请到家里来吃饭，为了考察这帮神是否具有敏锐的洞察力，就把自己的儿子给杀了熬成一锅肉来吃，这帮神觉得Tantalus过于残暴，就惩罚它站在冥河里，每次Tantalus口渴了想要低头喝水时，水面就会下降，这样他就喝不到水了，而 Tantalus的头上又有课果树，每次Tantalus饿了想要吃果子时，一阵风又会把果树吹到半空，这样他也吃不到果子了。所以tantalize就引申为逗弄，引诱但是又不给你。
